Masters/MSc/PGCert/PGDip কোনটা কী?

In Short:

• Master’s/MSc= Master of Science
• PGDip= Postgraduate Diploma
• PGcert= Postgraduate Certificate

Considering cost, duration, value, complexity:
MSc > PGDip > PGCert

• MSc: Full master’s degree with extensive coursework and usually a research project.

Does an MSc/PGCert/PGDip enhance CV?

– Yes

If I do an MSc/PGCert/PGDip, will it help me get a clinical job in the NHS?

– An MSc/PGCert/PGDip will not necessarily help you to gett your first clinical job in the NHS – সম্ভাবনা কম।

But an MSc/PGCert/PGDip in Medical Education will definitely help you get a medical education fellow/clinical teaching fellow job.

If you have an MSc/Phd/PGCert/PGCert, you will be benefitted when you are going to apply for training posts, as they carry points for self scoring.

Why do people go for MSc, PGCert, PGDip if they don’t help you get a job?

Roughly চার ধরণের মানুষ আছে যারা Master’s/ PGCert/ PGDip করে:

• People interested in Academia
• Some people need to come to the UK faster and starting a masters is probably easiest way
• আরেক ধরণের মানুষ আছে যারা কিছু না জেনে না বুঝেই master’s করতে চলে আসে (পরে আফসোস করে কেন আসলাম, master’s কইরা কি হবে জীবনে।)
• Some people do it to caim points for training post application.

Will both MSc/PGCert be equally helpful in enriching CV?

No. Master’s would certainly be more impactful.

Will both MSc/PGCert be equally helpful in getting a job in the NHS?

– None of these will be of much help for getting your first clinical job.

For Teaching Fellow jobs, Master’s will carry more value than PGCert. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that you need a Master’s or PGCert to get a clinical teaching fellow job. Most of the clinical fellows don’t have any postgraduate qualification of teaching when they are recruited and they end up doing a PGCert or MSc which is funded by the trust and funding for a PGCert during clinical teaching fellow job is quite common.

আপনি কিসে Masters করবেন এটা একান্তই আপনার ব‍্যাপার- আপনি সিদ্ধান্ত নিবেন। কিন্তু এখানে কিছু ব‍্যাপার মাথায় রাখা উচিতঃ

• আপনি কেন এই Masters টা করতে চাইছেন?
• এই Masters এর কাছ থেকে আপনার expectation কী?
• চাকরীর বাজারে এই masters আপনার প্রোফাইলে কতটুকু ভ‍্যালু এড করবে?
• আপনার যা expectation, তা এই masters পূরণ করবে কিনা।

For example, একবার একজন ডাক্তার এর সাথে কথা হয়েছিল, উনি Dermatology তে MSc করতে চাচ্ছিলেন, এবং উনার ইচ্ছা উনি এরপর Dermatologist হয়ে বাংলাদেশে প্র‍্যাকটিস করবেন। কিন্তু উনার জানা ছিল না যে, MSc একটা academic degree, clinical degree না। MSc will not prepare you for clinical career. You cannot claim to be a dermatologist in any country with an MSc.

কিভাবে Masters এর টপিক খুঁজে বের করবেন?

2. আরেকটা উপায় হচ্ছে University অনুযায়ী খুজা।
   যেমন আমি Imperial, UCL, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, Kings এই কয়েকটা ইউনিভার্সিটির ওয়েবসাইট ঘাটাঘাটি করেছিলাম।

কোন ভার্সিটি থেকে Master’s করতেছেন এটা কি ম‍্যাটার করে?
এই প্রশ্নটা করার আগে একটু ভেবে নেন- ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ‍্যালয়ে ফিজিক্স পড়া আর জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ‍্যালয়ে পড়ার মধ‍্যে পার্থক‍্য কী?
In an ideal world, institutions should not matter- the quality of work matters. But the world isn’t ideal and it does make a difference.

How does it make a difference?

• ধরেন আপনাকে কেউ একজন বললো সে Cambridge থেকে Masters করেছে আর আরেকজন বললো সে ______ University থেকে Masters করেছে। আপনি কি দুইজনকে সমানভাবে দেখবেন?
• Most Importantly: Networking, Opportunities and Culture: আপনি যদি ambitious হন এবং খুব exceptional কিছু করতে চান, You should be in a prestigious institution- this is pretty basic.
• বড় বা Prestigious Instutionগুলোতে Bigshot মানুষজন থাকেন, Networking করার অসাধারণ সুযোগ পাওয়া যায়।আমি Hammersmith Hospital এর Renal and Transplant Centre এ কাজ করতাম। Hammersmith Hospital এর Renal Department হচ্ছে ইউরোপের সবচেয়ে বড় Renal and Transplant Unit. এখানে আমি Professor Jeremy Levy আর Professor Edwina Brown এর সাথে কাজ করার সুযোগ পেয়েছি। তারা দুইজন Oxford Handbook of Dialysis বইয়ের লেখক এবং one of the most knowledgable and respected persons in the field of nephrology in the world.
• শুধুমাত্র Networking না, কাজ করার সুযোগ এর কথা চিন্তা করলেও বড় বড় জায়গায় বড় কাজ হয়, স্বাভাবিকভাবেই সুযোগও বেশি থাকবে- আমার তাই মনে হয়। কিন্তু don’t take it for granted.

Masters এর জন‍্যে কি scholarship পাওয়া যায়?
– Yes

Scholarship পাওয়া কি সহজ?

– না।

সবাই কি Scholarship পায়?
– না।

যারা Scholarship পায়না, তারা কিভাবে ইউনিভার্সিটির খরচ দেয়?
– যারা Scholarship পায়না তারা নিজের পকেট থেকে টাকা দিয়ে টিউশন ফী দেয়। অনেকে আংশিক খরচ দেশ থেকে দিয়ে আসে তারপর বাকিটা ইউকে এসে Part Time কাজ করে খরচ দেয়।

আমি কি scholarship পাবো?
– এটা বলা কঠিন।

Scholarship এর বাপারে জানবে কিভাবে?
– সবচেয়ে সহজ হচ্ছে Universityর funding page এ খুজে দেখা।
Funding এর page এ অনেক scholarship এর নাম পাবেন। সবগুলার eligibility criteria দেখবেন এবং যেগুলোতে আপনি Eligible ওইগুলোতে apply করে ফেলবেন।

খুব Prestigious কিছু scholarship:
Chevening Scholarship.
Commonwealth Scholarship
Erusmus Mundus Scholarship

এই scholarship গুলোর সবগুলোরই কিছু pre-requisite আছে। যেমনঃ আপনি বাংলাদেশে থাকেন এবং বাংলাদেশে কাজ করেন এটা একটা শর্ত এবং কোন কোনটাতে এমন শর্ত আছে যে আপনাকে ডিগ্রী শেষ করে বাংলাদেশে ফেরত আসতে হবে। If you’re currently working in the NHS and living in the UK, you probably will not be eligible for the above mentioned scholarships. However, there are other scholarships that you might be eligible forz. It might be worth having a to look at the ‘fundings and scholarships’ page of your university to find out more about it. For example, I myself got a scholarship from RCPE to do my masters.

Scholarship পাওয়া কি সহজ?
– না।

আমার কোন Research Experience নাই, আমি কি scholarship পাবো?
আমার কোন Publication নাই, আমি কি scholarship পাবো?
– খুব Generalize করে যদি বলি, Research Experience, Publication এগুলো profile এ value add করে। এগুলো থাকলে আপনার journey অনেকখানি easy হবে। কিন্তু এগুলো mandatory না। এগুলো ছাড়াও scholarship পাওয়া যায়।

যদি scholarship না পাই, তখন কিভাবে Tuition fee দিবো?
– Scholarship না পেলে নিজের পকেটের টাকা দিয়ে Tuition ফী দিতে হবে।

For anyone considering to do an MSc as a full-time working doctor:

Think about the reason to do an MSc at this stage. Does this sound logical to you? Have you completed the things that have the potential to add much more value in your profile? For example, royal college exams, important courses ALS/CCrisp etc. If you’ve done it all and you have a valid reason to start an MSc, you can definitely start.

How to look for topics?

Ask yourself, what is the reason of your MSc?

1. Just to claim points/just for a degree: Find out the cheapest and shortest course. Use findamasters.com. Explore universities and see which one fits your shoe.
2. To develop specific skillset and with a plan to find a PhD: You should know what your interests are. Which speciality you want to pursue etc. Talk to people who have done it.
