FAQs on MSc/PGCert/PGDip for doctors

Masters/MSc/PGCert/PGDip āϕ⧋āύāϟāĻž āϕ⧀?

In Short:

  • Master’s/MSc= Master of Science
  • PGDip= Postgraduate Diploma
  • PGcert= Postgraduate Certificate

Considering cost, duration, value, complexity:
MSc > PGDip > PGCert

â€ĸ MSc: Full master’s degree with extensive coursework and usually a research project.
â€ĸ PGCert: Shorter, focused on core skills or knowledge in a specific area.
â€ĸ PGDip: More comprehensive than a PGCert, with more in-depth coursework but usually no dissertation.

Detailed Description of Each:
  1. MSc (Master of Science)
    â€ĸ Length: Usually 1-2 years full-time, or 2-3 years part-time.
â€ĸ Structure: Includes both taught modules and a research dissertation or project.
â€ĸ Credits: Typically requires 180 credits (in the UK system).
â€ĸ Outcome: Provides a full master’s degree, with the potential for career advancement, higher-level roles, or further academic study (like a PhD).
â€ĸ Depth: Covers the subject in more depth than a PGCert or PGDip, including advanced research components.
  2. PGCert (Postgraduate Certificate)
â€ĸ Length: Often takes around 3-6 months full-time, or up to 1 year part-time.
â€ĸ Structure: Focuses on a few core modules, usually without a dissertation or research project.
â€ĸ Credits: Requires around 60 credits.
â€ĸ Outcome: Offers specialized knowledge but is more limited in scope compared to a PGDip or MSc. It’s a good option for professionals seeking targeted skills or knowledge without committing to a full degree.
â€ĸ Depth: Less in-depth than a PGDip or MSc, covering foundational or essential aspects of a subject.
  3. PGDip (Postgraduate Diploma)
    â€ĸ Length: Around 9-12 months full-time, or 1-2 years part-time.
â€ĸ Structure: Includes more modules than a PGCert but typically does not include a dissertation or major research project.
â€ĸ Credits: Requires around 120 credits.
â€ĸ Outcome: Provides more comprehensive knowledge than a PGCert but is not as in-depth as a full MSc. Often used by professionals seeking to deepen their knowledge in a field without the commitment of a master’s thesis.
â€ĸ Depth: More advanced than a PGCert, with more topics covered, but without the research depth of an MSc.

The choice between them depends on your career goals, time commitment, and interest in conducting research.

Does an MSc/PGCert/PGDip enhance CV?

– Yes

If I do an MSc/PGCert/PGDip, will it help me get a clinical job in the NHS?

– An MSc/PGCert/PGDip will not necessarily help you to gett your first clinical job in the NHS – āϏāĻŽā§āĻāĻžāĻŦāύāĻž āĻ•āĻŽāĨ¤

But an MSc/PGCert/PGDip in Medical Education will definitely help you get a medical education fellow/clinical teaching fellow job.

If you have an MSc/Phd/PGCert/PGCert, you will be benefitted when you are going to apply for training posts, as they carry points for self scoring.

Why do people go for MSc, PGCert, PGDip if they don’t help you get a job?

Roughly āϚāĻžāϰ āϧāϰāϪ⧇āϰ āĻŽāĻžāύ⧁āώ āφāϛ⧇ āϝāĻžāϰāĻž Master’s/ PGCert/ PGDip āĻ•āϰ⧇:

  • Some people do it to caim points for training post application.

Will both MSc/PGCert be equally helpful in enriching CV?

No. Master’s would certainly be more impactful.

Will both MSc/PGCert be equally helpful in getting a job in the NHS?

– None of these will be of much help for getting your first clinical job.

For Teaching Fellow jobs, Master’s will carry more value than PGCert. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that you need a Master’s or PGCert to get a clinical teaching fellow job. Most of the clinical fellows don’t have any postgraduate qualification of teaching when they are recruited and they end up doing a PGCert or MSc which is funded by the trust and funding for a PGCert during clinical teaching fellow job is quite common.
